It is always interesting looking over old posts that have been made to our Blog. This one is really interesting as it looks at the range of Moccasin Slippers that we sell. The post is from 26th April 2008. What is interesting to note is that a lot has happened since this post. A new coalition Government that seems heel bent on cutting everything and increasing costs - as a way of helping the country get out of its financial mess, or as they so frequently put it 'we have hard choices to make due to to the rather lacklustre approach to finances from the previous Government' or something along those lines. Whichever Government is in charge it generally does not help small business or at present, the amount that we all have to spend on anything other than living costs, seems to diminish everyday.

So, what is the purpose of this entry? Simply, take a look at our website at the prices of our Moccasin Slipper range between 2008 and today - you will notice that with an increase in raw materials, a VAT rise of 2.5% and transportation costs that making driving a luxury for some, you would expect prices to have soared in the past three years?

Our prices are still the same, yes we make less profit, yes we have had to make cost savings across the whole of the business, but to date our prices have remained relatively the same as 2008 - How many other business can say that?

Why does gardening seem to take forever?

I have just spent two hours cutting a medium growth garden - edging first with hand shears, then mowed. Mowing easy - shears pointless, why? I read somewhere once that blunt Hand Tools meant that a simple job would take ages because more effort is needed in order to carry out the most simplest of jobs. Not to mention that a lot of personal accidents are caused as well. Although I have read that I decided to use blunt, slightly rusty hand shears today for the edging of my lawn. The sweat and frustration has just let me purchasing from my own website so next time the job gets done quicker. Seen increases in your hand tool prices recently?

A new year just underway. All those resolutions have probably already gone by the wayside but has anyone noticed that prices, even in a recession, appear to have been increased?

Petrol in Kent is currently - £1.12 a litre!

Why, if we are supposed to be tightening the purse strings are some businesses, that make billions in profits each year, raising their prices? We all face difficult times in business at present but a raising of prices to sell to less people but make more profit seems practically unethical as only those with money can afford the increase.

I appreciate the economics of this situation but felt that it was worth mentioning that at www.toolsandleisure.co.uk we have not increased a single price so far - in fact next month our existing and some new product lines are going to be even cheaper than before. So why, why not hike prices and sell less for more so the market doesn't get flooded with products and demand drops?

Easy - every week a new or practical Hand Tool is redesigned, re packaged or restocked and the beauty of Hand Tools is that they are completely unique to different trades or individual jobs performed by DIY enthusiasts. Is it me or is it getting colder? This time of year seems a little depressing when the clocks change and you only see real daylight on a Sunday when you are not working. However, I am not alone - OK back to business. It has been a busy time lately gearing up for Christmas and securing new product lines for toolsandleisure.co.uk, the Hand Tool specialists, we are expanding our range on a weekly basis but for this article lets focus on winter essentials.

Although the central heating in the office block was on the other morning prior to arriving it felt cold and unwelcoming. After not using radiators for a long time air can build up causing them to be inefficiient. For 35p we solved this by purchasing a Radiator Bleed Key - yes we do buy our own stock!

At toolsandleisure we listen to our customers. Over the last few months we have surveyed our customers gauging their shopping experience. The results made us listen. 14% stated that the navigation aspect of our site - with a dynamic menu- was slow to load and was not easy to follow - a clearer approach was needed. 8% felt that a more easy defined category structure was needed, for example Hand Tools goes to a sub category page where needle files could be found. Well we listen to our customers and immediately set about having our site tweaked and redesigned in places. The result is hopefully the new and improved toolsandleisure website. Hand Tools - Still surprise me

The title depicts a jaw dropping moment and that is certainly true. Thumbing through the order catalogue recently I came across two new lines - I added them to my order. It was only when the Hand Tools were delivered and unpacked that I had my jaw dropping moment...based around the shear brilliance of someone out there who designs these Hand Tools - an imagination that allows us users an easier ride when it comes to doing our normal jobs. The first of these revelations is Rolson's 10mm and 13mm Flexi Head Ratchet Ring Spanner. It is made from high grade 40Cr alloy steel with a mirror polished finish. Complete with an 8 degree ratchet action and 180 degree pivoting head how did we ever mange without one? Now I appreciate that some of you may think that I am a little mad for having these thoughts but I think of the laborious Hand Tools that I have used instead of this! Although I sell Hand Tools I also use them in my day to day work - and anything that saves me time in my busy schedule is a must for my toolbox. The other Hand Tool - which again has gone straight in the tool box is the Toolzone 4pc Star Spanner Set - just brilliant, robust, easy to store and just simply a time saver. I have always had a passion for Hand Tools and how they allow me to do jobs quickly and efficiently and if you are a Toolie like me then you know that the surprises just keep on coming...and we love that. The Garden Shed

During a recent IT upgrade at www.toolsandleisure.co.uk I found that I had time on my hands. So rather through boredom, than necessity, I sorted the infamous garden shed. I found a lot of the DIY Hand Tools and accessories that we sell at www.toolsandleisure.co.uk to be extremely handy. These S Hooks are extremely useful for hanging items such as paint pots, the garden hose and accessories. At toolsandleisure we sell 5pc 4.5mm and 4pc 6mm S Hooks for £1.00 each. This turned out to be a very cheap ways to hang items. Having spent hours organising the shed I felt that it was necessary to provide better security. I fitted a 3 1/2" Cast Iron Hasp and Staple These are excellent value at just £2.50 and come complete with all fixing screws so no rummaging around your toolbox to find matching screws. Accompanying this I decided to replace my old flimsy padlock with a new 50mm Iron Padlock. Heavy duty, budget price and comes with three keys. So for a total cost of £7.50 I have a secure, well organised garden shed. Could you do this job any cheaper, let me know?

Wet and Dry - How do you use it?

Just one of those questions really, plenty of people ask and I'm sure that the use and way I have used it over the years may differ from others. I generally buy a mix grit pack, coarse, medium and fine like this: 10pc Wet and Dry. It's a cheap pack but it does the jobs and I would certainly not pay 50p a sheet!

If working on metal (after heavy preparation because it will not shift a great deal of rust in my opinion) I will use a rough grit. Plenty of elbow grease later a medium grit followed by a quick fine grit. Then I wet the paper (water but you can use a variety of lubricants) and by using circular motions it will 'blend' in the scratch marks left by other abrasives. Heavily wet the paper and surface several times to get a really smooth finish. Allow to dry fully and it's ready for prime and top coat. If I'm filling a rust hole I will repeat the 'fine' part above, again both in wet and dry forms to blend the filler in with what is left of the metal.

I have also used wet and dry abrasive paper in its dry form on things like MDF, both in the home and model making. I find that it will give a mirror finish to these types of non grain woods or even plastics such as acrylic. It is, for me, a less 'harsh' sanding experience than using sand (glass) paper. Just my thoughts, let me know how you use it and what other ways you have found to use this type of abrasive paper.

BBQ...is it nearly time?

Is the BBQ weather now upon us? I really enjoy a BBQ, great weather, great food and great company. The only thing that provides a small reason for not doing a BBQ has to be cleaning the grill pans and trays. Doesn’t matter how careful you are whilst cooking the grill is always severely charred with grease and other cooking waste. Hilka Brushes are a great solution to cleaning these grills and trays. Non-Slip Matting-multiple uses

At toolsandleisure.co.uk we aim to sell useful and practical products, most of which we use ourselves so can see the benefits. As a keen motorhome enthusiast, come rain or shine we go away. As this bank holiday was extremely wet it gave me the chance to make a few minor repairs to my motorhome. A problem that has bugged me for some time has been the fat splash guards on the cooker and how they will constantly rattle when on a journey. All things have been tightened, which took about two hours, but this did not solve the problem. So how do you stop things rattling? Well the only thing to hand was a roll of Non-Slip Matting, 2 minutes later no rattles. This matting is so versatile and I constantly keep finding uses for it. I use the Non Slip Matting mainly for keeping things in the cupboards from moving around when on the road, yet it keeps my phone on the dashboard and stops internal loose fit carpets from moving.

3m Tape Measures

This month has seen a growth in 3m measuring tapes (tape measures). Average sales went through the roof and we have had to restock three times already this month. As a way of ascertaining this increased trend we contacted a few customers with regards of their use and were surprised by the uniformity of responses.

Away in the Motorhome - My essentials

An absolutely glorious bank holiday weekend. Perfect weather. Saturday morning (early) I packed the motorhome and away to the traditional bank holiday seaside. As an experienced motorhome enthusiast everything is second nature when packing the van, but I always makes sure I have my essentials. The following items are my essentials that I take with me.

1. Latex gloves - when it comes to the end of the weekend these are essential for that toilet!!
2. Descent tent pegs - a must to stop awning intruders (not fellow campers!)
3. Rubber mallet - try getting the wind break poles in without one
4. S Hooks - perfect for hanging on the awning poles to dry all those swimming costumes
5. Multi purpose spirit level - in order to have a level van and a good nights sleep

I am so pleased I sell Hand Tools

It is days like today that I am so pleased that I sell Hand Tools. Having always enjoyed a toolbox brimming with Hand Tools I am still amazed at how few I really have when it comes to doing a specific job. Today I made use of a 9pc Torx Star Bit Socket Set, with a 3/8" drive and a 33pc Security Screwdriver Bit Set to replace the circuit board in my washing machine. I remember when security attachments for screwdriver or socket bars were a specialist tool, and didn't people pay for this fact! I feel that I have saved myself about a hundred pounds on this job alone today. The Hand Tools performed magnificently and the whole job only cost me £40 (including the purchase of the Hand Tools).

Moccasin Slippers-Fur lined or Cotton?

Here at toolsandleisure we have sold Moccasin Slippers for many years. We are a family run business and are originally from the West Country where sheepskin products are infamous in this area. We sell two different styles of slipper, fur-lined and cotton lined. Both are equally popular but from feedback received for a variety of reasons.

Fur lined Moccasin Slippers seem to be very popular at particular times during the year. Its plush acrylic lining giving comfort and warmth, and many customers comment on having a pair permanently in their caravan or motorhome. Colours have changed over the years with the introduction of pink, navy blue and plum to complement the tradition tan, or beige colour. Available in sizes 3-8 these slippers are an excellent, locally manufactured product.

We have been selling the Cotton Lined version of Moccasin Slippers for a few years now as an alternative to those who require a normal temperature slipper. This is by no means saying that they are not warm just not as warm as the original, making it an all year round item of footwear.These Moccasin Slippers are a genuine swede upper with a padded cotton tartan lining and an outdoor PVC sole. Sizes available are 3-8. Colour: Navy blue, plum and beige.

New Reflectors Now In

At toolsandleisure we stock a variety of different products but one of our most popular sellers are reflectors, both self adhesive and self attach.

We were recently contacted by Simon (Wilts) a 2nd time customer to see if we could source a round self adhesive reflector in red, amber and clear, rear, side and front respectively. Well we have manged it. The new range of reflectors are now in stock and are proving to be as popular as the rectangular range. Please tell us where you use them outside of trailers, motorhomes and caravan.

Lynch Pins and R Clips

The versatile clips...but what do you use them for? I have often wondered why we sell so many of these clips and pins. I know of a few uses for R Clips such as retaining shaft collars onto a main shaft, fixing wheels to shaft etc but what else? Also, Lynch pins, yes they are used in caravan stabiliser units and agriculture but what else? Another interesting point is that they vary so much in price, just enter and search on google shopping and you can pay up to 30p each plus VAT for a Lynch pin, we sell 4 for £1.00, whether 8mm or 6mm, and 25p each for an R-clip, we sell bundles of 10 for only £1.00.

It has been a wish of mine for sometime now to create this blog...and here it is. Hello to you all and welcome. Tools and Leisure.co.uk is now 5 months old, but the business of travelling the UK working on vintage steam rallies, agricultural shows, RV and caravan shows is coming up to its 35th year.

In that time we have met so many wonderful people with such a wealth of experience of working with some wonderful vintage machinery...to those with a 60' Motorhome that travel the UK until it is time to go back to Spain. It would seem a real shame if we could not provide a place for all this knowledge to be thrown.

I hope that with time these excellent people will contribute to this blog, and I trust that others will enjoy reading/sharing/contributing to its content. Thank you to all our visitors for your support. Please feel free to contact us for any reason and at any time.
